Oscar Fresh

Admittedly, I have not seen all of the movies nominated for the Oscars, so this list may change as I do (hopefully) get out to see them, but that won't stop me from making a few predictions.

Best Picture

Nominees: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire

Winner: Slumdog Millionaire

Achievement in Directing

Nominees: David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon), Gus Van Sant (Milk), Stephen Daldry (The Reader), Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)

Winner: Danny Boyle (only four times since 1990 has the director of the best picture winner not taken home best director honours)

Actor in a Leading Role

Nominees: Richards Jenkins (The Visitor), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)

Winner: Mickey Rourke (Sean Penn should garner some votes because he portrayed a gay politician, but with the amount of money The Wrestler has dumped into marketing and promotion, there's no way they'll let Rourke walk home empty-handed)

Actress in a Leading Role

Nominees: Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Angelina Jolie (Changeling), Melissa Leo (Frozen River), Meryl Streep (Doubt), Kate Winslett (The Reader)

Winner: Anne Hathaway

Actor in a Supporting Role

Nominees: Josh Brolin (Milk), Robert Downey, Jr. (Tropic Thunder), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road)

Winner: Heath Ledger (he can't not win, right?)

Actress in a Supporting Role

Nominees: Amy Adams (Doubt), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barelona), Viola Davis (Doubt), Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler)

Winner: Taraji P. Henson (there's no way Marisa Tomei wins another Oscar)

Animated Feature Film

Nominees: Bolt, Kung-Fu Panda, WALL-E

Winner: WALL-E (generally, this is about the easiest category to pick a winner out of)

Documentary Feature

Nominees: The Betrayal - Nerakhoon, Encounters at the End of the World, The Garden, Man on Wire, Trouble the Water

Winner: Man on Wire

Those are the big ones, the ones everyone cares about. Slumdog Millionaire should take home a lot of hardware; The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will probably come awfully close to being shut out, just like at the Golden Globes.
