Reviews You Can Use: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
If you haven't seen Pirates 4 yet, chances are you've at least heard the reviews - namely, that if this had been the first film, we wouldn't be up to four.
The first, most notable change from the previous three films is the removal of the vapid plotline involving Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. It's been replaced, instead, with a lukewarm relationship between Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz. Realistically, that storyline should have been removed as soon as everyone realized that Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow escalated it from side character to main focal point; it should never have lasted three whole movies.
The plot of On Stranger Tides revolves around Jack finally having the chance to find his dream booty - the Fountain of Youth. The Spanish Armada, Geoffrey Rush's Barbosa and Ian McShane's Blackbeard are all that stand in his way, albeit in constantly changing levels of seriousness.
The appearance of Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth beg questions for future Pirates endeavours. The Fountain was Jack's prize all along, and now that it's been conquered, what more can be done with it. And if future movies are going to pit Sparrow against other pirates, there really aren't any more well-known than Blackbeard, so how are they going to follow it up?
But, that being said, they've managed to get to four movies so far, and up to now, it's grossed about $800 million worldwide, so keep 'em coming until the crowds stop showing up.
